CranioSacral Therapy
A Gentle Approach to Relaxation and Nervous System Support
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on bodywork technique that uses very light touch to support relaxation and ease patterns of tension throughout the body.
The craniosacral system includes the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Using subtle contact at specific areas of the body, the therapist assesses tissue movement and areas of restriction that may be contributing to discomfort or difficulty fully relaxing.
At Williamsburg Massage & Lymphatic Therapy, CranioSacral Therapy is offered by Laura and may be used as the primary focus of your Therapeutic Massage or thoughtfully incorporated with traditional massage techniques.
How Is CranioSacral Therapy Different From Traditional Massage?
Traditional massage generally uses techniques such as kneading, compression, stretching, and sustained pressure to work directly with the muscles and soft tissues.
CranioSacral Therapy is much more subtle. The amount of pressure used is extremely light—often described as approximately the weight of a nickel. Rather than pushing or forcing the tissues, Laura uses gentle, sustained contact and follows the body’s natural responses.
The experience is typically quiet, calming, and deeply relaxing. Because it does not rely on deep pressure, CranioSacral Therapy may be especially appealing to clients who are sensitive to touch, easily overstimulated, or looking for a gentler form of therapeutic bodywork.
When appropriate, CranioSacral Therapy can also be combined with massage to create a session that addresses muscular tension while encouraging a deeper state of relaxation.
Why Do Clients Choose CranioSacral Therapy?
Clients commonly seek CranioSacral Therapy for support with:
Stress and difficulty fully relaxing
Neck and shoulder tension
Head or facial tension
Jaw tension
Tension associated with repetitive activity or posture
General feelings of physical or nervous system overwhelm
Sensitivity to deeper pressure
Persistent areas of restriction or discomfort
A desire for gentle, restorative bodywork
Every person’s experience is different. CranioSacral Therapy is not intended to diagnose or cure a medical condition, and results cannot be guaranteed.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your 60 or 90 Minute Therapeutic Massage
CranioSacral Therapy is currently offered within a 60 or 90 minute Therapeutic Massage with Laura.
Your appointment will begin with a consultation to discuss what you are experiencing, areas of tension or sensitivity, and what you would like to receive from your session.
Depending on your needs and preferences, CranioSacral Therapy may be the primary focus of your appointment or incorporated into a customized therapeutic massage.
Consultation and Assessment
Laura will ask about your health history, current concerns, injuries, surgeries, and any areas where you are experiencing discomfort or sensitivity.
She may also evaluate your posture, movement, or areas of muscular tension before determining the most appropriate approach for your session.
Please share any recent changes in your health, including headaches, dizziness, neurological symptoms, head or spinal injuries, or medical procedures.
During the Session
CranioSacral Therapy is generally performed while you are resting comfortably on the treatment table. Laura may use gentle contact at areas such as the:
Head and base of the skull
Neck and shoulders
Spine
Sacrum and pelvis
Feet
Other areas connected to your individual tension patterns
The touch is light and usually held for a period of time. Unlike traditional massage, there may be very little movement during portions of the session.
You may notice warmth, gentle pulsing, softening, subtle movement, or a feeling of release. You may also simply experience a deep state of relaxation. Some clients become so relaxed that they fall asleep.
There is no particular sensation you are expected to feel. Your experience will be unique to your body and what it needs that day.
Clothing and Draping
If your appointment is primarily focused on CranioSacral Therapy, it may be performed while you remain fully clothed. Comfortable, flexible clothing is recommended.
If CranioSacral Therapy is being incorporated into a therapeutic massage, you may undress to your personal comfort level. Professional draping will be used throughout the session, just as it is during any massage appointment.
Laura will explain the recommended approach and make sure you are comfortable before beginning.
What Does CranioSacral Therapy Feel Like?
CranioSacral Therapy is often described as quiet, calming, and deeply restorative. Because the touch is so light, the experience may feel very different from what you expect during a traditional massage.
Some clients notice subtle changes during the session, including:
A sense of warmth
Gentle pulsing or movement
Softening in areas of tension
Slower or deeper breathing
A feeling of heaviness or lightness
A deeply relaxed or restful state
Others may not notice an immediate physical change but feel calmer, more grounded, or less tense afterward.
After Your Session
Following your appointment, you may feel deeply relaxed, tired, lighter, or more aware of your body. Some clients notice changes immediately, while others become aware of subtle differences over the next day or two.
Allow yourself time to transition slowly after your session and pay attention to how your body feels.
Contact an appropriate healthcare provider if you experience new, severe, or concerning symptoms.
Is CranioSacral Therapy Right for Me?
CranioSacral Therapy may be worth exploring if you are looking for gentle, restorative bodywork or have difficulty tolerating deeper pressure.
It may also be a good option if you feel physically tense or overstimulated and would like a session focused on quiet, intentional touch and relaxation.
CranioSacral Therapy is a complementary bodywork technique and is not a substitute for medical evaluation or treatment. Certain conditions involving intracranial pressure or recent injury to the head, brain, or spine may require medical clearance before receiving this work. Please contact us before scheduling if you are unsure whether CranioSacral Therapy is appropriate for you.
