Myofascial Release

Supporting More Comfortable, Natural Movement

Myofascial release is a hands-on technique used to address tension and restriction within the fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports the muscles and other structures throughout the body.

When fascia becomes tight or does not move as freely, it may contribute to feelings of stiffness, pulling, muscular tension, or limited movement. Myofascial release uses slow, sustained pressure and gentle stretching to encourage the tissues to soften and move more easily.

At Williamsburg Massage & Lymphatic Therapy, myofascial release is used as a technique within your massage rather than booked as a separate service. All of our massage therapists are trained in this modality and may incorporate it into a Therapeutic or Relaxation Massage when appropriate.

How Can Myofascial Release Help?

Myofascial release may be used to:

  • Address areas of persistent tightness or restriction

  • Improve tissue mobility and flexibility

  • Support more comfortable movement

  • Reduce feelings of pulling or stiffness

  • Work with tension caused by posture or repetitive activity

  • Prepare restricted areas for additional massage techniques

  • Provide focused bodywork without relying solely on deep pressure

Your therapist will determine where myofascial techniques may be helpful based on how your tissues feel, your movement, and the goals discussed during your consultation.

What Does It Feel Like?

Myofascial release usually feels slower and more focused than traditional massage. Your therapist may apply gentle, sustained pressure or a gradual stretch and hold the area while allowing the tissue time to respond.

You may notice a feeling of pulling, warmth, lengthening, or softening beneath the therapist’s hands. The technique should not feel sharp or forceful, and you are encouraged to communicate throughout your session.

Personalized to Your Body

Myofascial release is one of the many techniques our therapists may use to personalize your massage. It can be incorporated into any Therapeutic or Relaxation Massage when it complements your needs and overall experience.
